Paddle Canada Moving Water Canoe Instructor Introduction Tandem

 

Aim

This course introduces the canoeist to many of the fundamental skills, knowledge and manoeuvres of teaching canoeing in whitewater. The nature of Class 1 rapids provides a friendly and safe environment to teach and learn the fundamentals of canoeing through moving water before venturing into whitewater rapids. This is an excellent course for people to take who are interested in teaching moving water skills for participants looking to expand their canoe tripping skills or are planning on moving from lake canoe trips to river trips.

The successful candidate is considered an entry-level Moving Water canoe instructor who can then teach the tandem Intro Moving watercourse.

Prerequisites

Moving Water Intermediate

NOTE – Tandem Instructors must have the ability to safely manoeuvre a tandem canoe solo in a controlled manner. Tandem Instructors Candidates must be able to demonstrate tandem manoeuvres (such as sideslips, pivots, and turns) toward and away from their paddling side in a tandem canoe.


 

Information

 

Course Dates: June 9 – 12, 2022, the course begins Thursday at 1:00 pm at Devil Lake dock and ends approximately Sunday at 1:00 pm at Devil Lake dock. This instructor course coincides with a skills course and will be a combination of shared instruction and learning sessions. Participants who are not properly prepared may have to mentor on a 2nd course with an instructor to become properly certified.

Important – This is an early season course and drysuits or proper wet suits with paddling tops are mandatory. Paddling gloves, booties, helmets, and beanies are all mandatory for all participants.

Location: This course is taught upstream from Missinipe, SK which is on the beautiful warm waters of the Churchill River. Camping in the area the night before is highly recommended and there are hostel or cabin options that can be booked in Missinipe through Churchill River Canoe Outfitters.

Communal Camping: All participants will need to bring their own camping equipment including tents, sleeping bags, as well as pack their own food for the duration of the course. Common items such as group tarp, portable potties, group cooking fire are all provided and shared. Upon registration, a course gear list is provided.

 

Course Cost: $600

 

About the Instructor: Geoff Horn is a Paddle Canada instructor trainer in Moving Water, Lakewater, and Camping (Canoe Tripping), and former Wilderness Education Association (WEA) Instructor. Geoff has set up and taught many XC ski courses & canoe programs in schools all over southern SK and was a session instructor at the U of R teaching canoeing and skiing. Geoff has helped design and create canoe certification standards for Regina & area schools for safe canoe tripping and wilderness trips.
