Paddle Canada Lake Introduction Tandem Canoe Course
Aim
This canoe course was created to introduce the novice paddler to paddling with a partner in Lake Water situations. This canoe course serves as the prerequisite for Canoe Tripping & Moving Water Canoe courses. Successful completion of this course provides you with a great understanding of lake canoe paddling skills, manoeuvers, and knowledge.
Prerequisites
Canoe Basics or previous paddling experience approved by the instructor.

Course Dates: Sept 20, 2024, 4:30 pm – 7:30 pm and Sept 21, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
Course Cost: $225 per person, with a limit of 10 participants
Location: This canoe course is taught on Wascana Lake in the heart of Regina, SK. We meet at the small beach area in the North-East corner of the lake, just off Wascana Parkway/Broad Street. Use the parking lot for the Marina or Willows Restaurant.
Gear needed: All participants will need to bring their own paddling equipment such as PFD, paddle, throw bag, bailer, and canoe. If you need to rent gear for the course please use the registration extra at the bottom of the page.
Theory – This course covers information and tips on preparing for canoeing, safety regulations and safe canoe procedures, environmental hazards, and an in-depth review of the parts of the canoe and canoe equipment.
- General paddling skills:
– Launch and remove canoe (shore or dock)
– Paddling concepts (MITH, basic: hand placement)
– Paddling mechanics (balance & trim, and pivot point)
– Stroke terminology (catch, power phase, recovery)
– Switching sides in cadence
– Body position (centered on the seat & reach with the shaft hand) - Paddling strokes:
– Forward and Reverse
– Check (stop)
– Draw
– Pry or Push Away
– Stern rudders & J Stroke
– Low Brace - Maneuvers (performed on one side):
– Forward straight-line paddling (50 metres)
– Wide turns (triangular course)
– Pivot turns
– Reverse paddling
– Backing up
– Left and right turns
– Docking
– Switching ends in the canoe (if time permits)
– Paddling in cadence

About the Instructor, Geoff Horn is a Paddle Canada instructor trainer in Moving Water, Lakewater, and Camping (Canoe Tripping), and former Wilderness Education Association (WEA) Instructor. Geoff has set up and taught many XC ski courses & canoe programs in schools all over southern SK and was a session instructor at the U of R teaching canoeing and skiing. Geoff has helped design and create canoe certification standards for Regina & area schools for safe canoe tripping and wilderness trips.
