Intro to Winter Camping Course – February 10th & 11th, 2024
Price: $250 per person – Minimum 4 people to run the course, Max. 10 people

Winter camping has its perks. There are fewer bugs and crowds while you experience the beauty and peacefulness of a pristine winter wonderland. But, if you’re not prepared, it can also be cold and challenging. To set yourself up for a successful winter campout, you’ll want to build on your knowledge of fair-weather camping while adjusting for the additional challenges of cold temperatures, snowy landscapes, and unpredictable weather.
Learn from an expert during this 2-day course in a location that allows you the comfort and safety of learning how to winter camp. In addition to the 2 days, there will be a Pre-course Zoom Meeting on Feb 7th from 7:30-8:30 pm to discuss course equipment, food, and packing. so you will be able to go over your gear list to ensure you pack the correct items for the course. During the course, you will cover a wide range of skills and techniques to prepare you for winter camp adventures.
Options for outdoor sleeping include a tent (hot & cold), tarp, and quinzee (snow conditions pending). A suggested gear list will be provided upon registration. A waiver is required to attend the course.
Winter camp Itinerary
- The course starts at 10 am on Saturday, Feb 10th, Introductions meet the others and look at the camp

- Basic review of camp skills and adaption to winter camping
- Review of sleeping options (Quinze/Igloo, super shelter, hot tent cold tent, tarp, sleep under stars)
- Personal shelter building/set up and review.
- Clothing insulation layers/ moisture management.
- Fire/cooking/lighting
- Water/health/calorie difference in winter travel
- Trip plan (examples)
- First aid specifics for winter camping
- Vehicle, travel, and communication issues
- The course wraps up around 2 pm on Sunday, Feb 11th

About the Instructor
Colin Frey was a part-time explorer and adventurer until he quit his job as a transmission mechanic to pursue his passion for the outdoors. In 2007 Colin started the company, Renewed by Nature, and began taking courses and getting certifications. Colin has a wide range of outdoor & wilderness skills from basic survival (think Survivor Man & Alone but for real) to fully guided super comfortable luxury canoe trips. Colin’s unique skill set was immediately in high demand, and he is actively teaching courses & guiding for the Prairie Valley School Division, Greenall Outdoor School, Fresh Air Experience, Churchill River Canoe Outfitters, J & T First Aid Training, Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation, to name a few. In the fall of 2013 Colin added Polar Bear Tour guide to his list of guiding skills and works for Lazy Bear Expeditions in Churchill Manitoba. Colin is a big believer in practicing what he preaches for wilderness training and is always up for an adventure with family or friends. Colin has worked with many outdoor professionals and mentors in the outdoors, but most notably, Colin apprenticed under Mors Kochanski and is a Mors acknowledged instructor. Colin’s work takes him all over Saskatchewan & northern Manitoba. Colin makes great use of the parks and areas around Regina giving workshops and teaching courses for various schools, clubs, communities, and Businesses. The Churchill River, north of LaRonge, is his favorite wilderness playground, Colin has been on many canoe trips as a guide and for his own pleasure with his family.
