If you worry about what to do if your car hits the ditch in a severe winter storm, now's the time to take this course.

In this three day course we will cover the following topics:

  • Car survival kits
  • Theory of insulation
  • Creating a cocoon, making your vehicle a home
  • Improvising insulation
  • Vapor barriers
  • Carbon monoxide
  • Improvised heaters, stoves
  • Travel plan, communication and signalling
  • Mental strength
  • Signs and symptoms of hypothermia and frostbite
  • Getting yourself out of the ditch

DAY ONE: We will get a chance to prepare our vehicles for spending the night. We will go over different theories and ideas and give people as much time as needed to improve.

DAY TWO: Talking about and practicing improvised shelters and insulation techniques. We will also be showing and practicing strategies for extracting a vehicle. As well as some fire lighting and improvised stoves and heaters. Talk about carbon monoxide, hypothermia, and frostbite.

DAY THREE: Mental survival games, food, water, communication, and signaling.

What to bring:

Winter clothing, personal effects, what you would normally carry in your vehicle on a highway trip. Any gear you would like to try out. Your own food and bedding (including sleeping bag). There is a warm building provided with beds, bathrooms, and a kitchen for food prep.

Additional info:

This will be a hands-on course. While no one is required to spend the night outside, it is an opportunity to do so in a safe environment (available beds in a heated building). Bring clothes and sleeping gear with the idea of sleeping in a vehicle and in an improvised shelter or tent. A good portion of the course will be spent outside, so bring sufficient clothing and layers.
