Moving Water Parent & Kid Tandem Course
This course introduces the canoeist to many of the fundamental skills, knowledge and manoeuvres of canoeing in whitewater. The nature of Class I rapids provides a friendly and safe environment to teach and learn the fundamentals of canoeing through moving water before venturing into whitewater rapids. This is an excellent course for parents and kids to enjoy a 3-day get away and learn a ton of great white water canoe skills together. The pace and design of this course is well suited for paddlers with lake canoe experience that want to learn about white water and how to successful navigate rapids. Kids taking this course should be at least *16 years of age or older, and have had previous lake training.
The successful candidate is considered a beginner river canoeist, capable of performing basic shore and water-based river rescues, including self-rescue. The candidate has been introduced to basic river manoeuvres such as eddy turns and ferries while paddling tandem, in Class 1-2 rapids, ripple and small wave rapids.
Lake Intro or Intermediate Tandem or permission of instructor based on proof of prior learning of equivalent skill and knowledge.

Course Cost: $700 per pair
Course price does not include canoe or paddling equipment rental, arrangement for that can be made through Churchill River Canoe Outfitters.
Location: This course is taught upstream from Missinipe SK which is on the beautiful warm waters of the Churchill River. Camping in our around the area the night before is highly recommended and there are hostel or cabin options that can be booked in Missinipe through Churchill River Canoe Outfitters.
Communal Camping: All participants will need to bring their own camping equipment including tents, sleeping bags, and camp gear. Meals are included in the price and camp items such as group tarps, portable potties, and water filters are all provided and shared. This course is fully guided however participants are welcome to participate in common camp practices and welcome to learn valuable camping skills or food planning or prep skills. Upon registration a course gear list is provided.
About the Instructors, Geoff Horn is a Paddle Canada instructor trainer in Moving Water, Lakewater, and Camping (Canoe Tripping), and former Wilderness Education Association (WEA) Instructor. Geoff has set up and taught many XC ski courses & programs in schools all over southern SK and was a session instructor at the U of R teaching canoeing and skiing. Geoff has helped design and create canoe certification standards for Regina & area schools for safe canoe tripping and wilderness trips. Geoff is also a Senior Canoe Instructor for Churchill River Canoe Outfitters.
Colin Frey was a part time explorer and adventurer until he quit his job as a transmission mechanic to pursue his passion for the outdoors. In 2007 Colin started the company, Renewed by Nature, and began taking courses and getting certifications. Colin has a wide range of outdoor & wilderness skills from basic survival (think Survivor Man & Alone but for real) to fully guided super comfortable luxury canoe trips. Colin’s unique skill set was immediately in high demand and he is actively teaching courses & guiding for Prairie Valley School Division, Greenall Outdoor School, Churchill River Canoe Outfitters, J & T First Aid Training, Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation, to name a few. In the fall of 2013 Colin added Polar Bear Tour guide to his list of guiding skills, and works for Lazy Bear Expeditions in Churchill Manitoba. Colin is a big believer in practicing what he preaches for wilderness training and is always up for an adventure with family or friends. Colin has worked with many outdoor professionals and mentors in the outdoors, but most notably, Colin apprenticed under Mors Kochanski and is a Mors acknowledged instructor. Colin’s mission statement for Renewed by Nature is, “I’ve made it my business to be safe in the wilderness”.
