Without any history in sport or athletics, I was drawn to cross-country trail running after hearing stories of people covering astonishing distances. I’d thought a lot about lacing up some shoes for many years before I heard an interview with Rosie Swale-Pope, a 60-something British woman who was running around the world. It gets hard to keep making excuses when you hear what people are able to achieve! Even then, it wasn’t for a few more years until I was 35 years old that I finally bought my first pair of running shoes and hit the trails. In 2015 I started signing up for races, participating in my first half-marathon, running Leg 3 of Sinister Seven (a 100-mile mountain trail race), and completing my first 50km trail race. Getting to know the ultra-running community has opened a window into a strange culture where anything seems possible, and I’ve embraced that attitude whole-heartedly as I train for my first attempt at a 100-mile race in July 2016. Wish me luck! -Joey Lorer
