My name is Chad Sawatzky and I am super excited to be returning for a second year as The North Face trail running ambassador.
I am a Clydesdale runner (runner over 200 pounds) and love running trails with my giant German Shepherd! I have run race distances from 5k to 50k trail ultra-marathons. I prefer to run trail, but I have participated in many road races as well. As you may have guessed from my Clydesdale classification, I am not a speedster, but pride myself on only having one DNF in my entire running career.
I am a husband and a father of 4 active children. My eldest two (13 and 12 years old) have started to run and bike the trails with me. My youngest two (6 and 4 years old) love exploring the downtrails along the riverbank and are my biggest fans at race finish lines! My wife is not a runner, but she loves spin class and enjoys biking, cross country and downhill skiing. Whatever age we are, we all put our North Face clothing and gear to the test! Due to a family member’s health challenge this spring, my race schedule will not be as full as it has been in recent years, but I will continue to spend lots of time on the trails in and around Saskatoon on my fat bike or running with my dog. There is nothing better than being surrounded by nature to help forget about life’s trials and tribulations.
If you are new to trail running or haven’t tried it yet, the Saskatoon Road Runners organize a trail race series of 3 races in and around Saskatoon. The first one has already come and gone, but there are still 2 more races; the next one is July 17 at Cranberry Flats and then September 18 at Blackstrap. Another great trail run is the Prairie Summit Run-It which is at Buffalo Pound on Sept 25. Come on out and give trail a try! If you see me and the giant dog with a pink collar on the trails, be sure to say hi and share some of your trail stories with me.
